A Description of the Delta by Amy Rose

When Wes asked me to reflect on The Mission Trip to Shaw, Mississippi, I see so many “pictures” running through my head. I see rain, lots of rain. I see the bayou.  I see the biggest water moccasin I have ever seen in my life, lots of little turtles, and lots of people waving.  When the week began, I was very excited about the opportunity to work alongside both Erin and Scott Evetts.  I was a sponsor with them at Preteen Camp many years ago and what fun it is to see them grow into such great young adults.  Equally exciting was watching the Martin girls spend time working, pulling weeds, carrying branches, and laying tile- knowing they will grow into youth with a heart for missions just like their parents.  I finally learned the domino game 42- thanks to The Evett Clan and Jim Booher.  I also spent some time in the kitchen with Ricardo and Jerry.  Lots of memories of my CT Family made.

Shaw, Mississippi brings to mind so many history lessons in racial tension.  While everyone we met waved at us and greeted us with open arms, you can feel some tension bubbling just under the surface between one another.  I grew up in Oak Cliff and I teach in a low socio-economic school.  I’ve gone on home visits, and I have seen some pretty rough home situations.  Nothing could really prepare me for a drive through some of the neighborhoods in Shaw.  On a street you could find some modest homes, well cared for standing next to shacks barely standing.  I did not expect to see young families living in those shacks.  BUT- young families did live there.  And yet, with my window rolled down, they waved and said hello happily.  Working alongside a Catholic Parish was a new experience.  They were equally open to making new friends, having lunch with them was a special time.  When we finished our project, replacing some tiles at a learning center run by The Sisters, we went to a local school to paint some bleachers.  A couple of men who work as groundskeepers joined us.  That was not uncommon.  A few locals helped paint a new mural as well.

I hope that some excitement or spark will catch in Shaw.  That the people can come together, take ownership and move past their differences toward the future.  I also pray that Cliff Temple might be able to return and continue to help them.  It wasn’t long ago that people had written off Oak Cliff.  But God had other plans…
